As many of you now know, the iconic Rosebud Bar & Grill is closing its’ doors this Monday May 27th. This bar has been a cornerstone in the Davis Square area of Somerville. The Rosebud has had the same ownership since before a lot of us were even a tickle in our daddy’s pants. Sadly, this historical landmark is changing hands, which means that the venue/restaurant/bar will be closed as you and I know it. There are a lot of mixed feelings from this writer as I am trying to put my thoughts down on paper. Where the hell do I begin? The Rosebud has been a “home away from home” for a lot of people over the years, especially this writer. One of the first venues I’ve ever truly felt “at home” in. The great personalities of the staff, and the awesome mix of great food, drinks, and music, has been one of the reasons why this venue holds a special place in our hearts (and livers).
The Rosebud Bar & Grill is going to be abuzz this weekend, and anyone who is anyone is going to be there to pay their final respects. They’ve got four shows lined up, and one final night of karaoke planned before they close their doors for good. The lineup for the shows is as follows:
THURSDAY MAY 23: 1990-FINE. Cover:$5-$7. On Thursday 1990-Fine will be rocking out all night playing you the best of the best of the 90′s. Fun band, they mix a little bit of 90′s themed trivia into their packed sets, as well as 90′s themed prizes. They always get a fine crowd out to their gigs, and tonight should be no different.
FRIDAY MAY 24: FULL SCENE AHEAD PRESENTS: THE RUCKUS, SWEATSHOP, WINDSOR TREE, & CATALION. Cover:$7. The cool guys at FSA are putting together one last hurrah at the Rosebud. These guys always get the best of the best to play on that stage, and Friday night will be no different. Go down there and catch four of the coolest bands in the scene take the stage one last time.
SATURDAY MAY 25: CALICO PRESENTS: THE NERVOUS EATERS, SOURPUNCH, ASA BREBNER & THE ROMAN SAUNNA WARRIORS. Cover: $7-10. Cal Cali & Calico Production’s put on this jam-packed Saturday night bill. The Nervous Eaters are a great band to see live, and this will probably be the final time you will get to see them in this intimate environment.
SUNDAY MAY 26: SOLO SEXX, OUR FRIENDS ANIMALS, AND MORE TBA: Cover Free. The last live music show of the Rosebud, and it is FREE. You have no excuse to not come down. Plus isn’t Monday Memorial Day?
MONDAY MAY 27: ROSEBUD KARAOKE SOMERVILLE. Cover: Free. Last night of existence for the venue/bar as you know it. DJ Dave will be on hand to guide you through what should be an awesome night of Karaoke. Although I do suspect that it will probably end with him just DJing music. I don’t know, you don’t know. Why don’t you go down to this historic event at one of Davis Square’s most historic places? It will be a blast!
So that’s all she wrote folks. Whether you plan to go for the entire weekend, or just for one last night, make sure you wish all of the fine staff at the Rosebud goodbye and good luck. When you are there, tell Zach and Sean to make you a “Gordo” (the awesome pink lemonade-like drink named after yours truly). Make sure you torment Ed by ordering a bunch of food and customizing everything (he loves that, and considers it a challenge). Don’t mess with Norm or Eric, just thank them for taking care of you these last couple of years.
Now comes time for the sappy part of this article (you knew it was going to come). I am having trouble keeping my head and eyes clear as I write this. The guys of the Rosebud are a part of my family. I have never been apart of something so cool, and something so fun in my entire life. Working there never actually felt like work, it felt more like hosting cool parties with your friends, that you had no idea who was going to show up. There was no fighting, no petty bullshit, nothing that would seem typical of a workplace. Just a bunch of guys having fun, and enjoying what they do. I am going to miss those guys, and that place. Thank you guys, hopefully one of these days we get to do this again. It has been an awesome ride, and I for one am sorry that it has to come to an end. I don’t want to end this on a sad gloomy note. I can say without reservation that all of us can hold our heads up high. We did not go under because we were bad, we went out because we were too good at what we did. We have a brand and a legacy that will surely stand the test of time.
With much love,
